• By Car: If you’re driving from Los Angeles, take US-101 North, and you’ll reach Santa Barbara in about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The scenic drive along the coast makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
• By Train: Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner offers a scenic ride along the coast, with Santa Barbara as one of its main stops. The train station is conveniently located downtown, making it easy to explore the city on foot or by bike.
• By Air: Santa Barbara has its own airport (SBA) with connections to major cities. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the airport to downtown, with rental cars, taxis, and ride-shares available.

Once you’re in Santa Barbara, getting around is easy and enjoyable:

• Walking: Downtown Santa Barbara is compact and pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to explore on foot. Many of the city’s attractions, shops, and restaurants are within walking distance from each other, especially along State Street, the main thoroughfare.
• Biking: Santa Barbara is a bike-friendly city with plenty of bike rental shops. The city’s bike paths, especially along the coast, offer a scenic way to explore. You can rent a bike and cruise along the beachfront or explore neighborhoods like the Funk Zone and the Mesa.
• Public Transportation: The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) operates buses throughout the city and surrounding areas. The Downtown and Waterfront Shuttle is especially convenient, offering a quick and affordable way to travel between downtown, Stearns Wharf, and the harbor.
• Car: While it’s not necessary to have a car for exploring downtown, having one can be convenient if you plan to visit nearby areas like the Santa Ynez Valley for wine tasting or the scenic Rattlesnake Canyon for a hike. Parking is generally available, but it’s a good idea to check for free or low-cost options, like those along Cabrillo Boulevard or in city parking lots.
• Ride-Sharing & Taxis: Services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in Santa Barbara, providing a convenient way to get around if you prefer not to drive. Taxis are also an option, particularly for quick trips around town.

After checking into the hotel of your choice, it’s time to start exploring this beautiful coastal city!

My recommendation is to take a stroll along State Street, the vibrant heart of downtown Santa Barbara. This lively thoroughfare is perfect for soaking in the local atmosphere, with its mix of high-end boutiques, cozy cafes, and diverse dining options.

Book Den is one of California’s oldest independent bookstores. It has been a staple on State Street since 1902. It offers a well-curated selection of new, used, and rare books in a cozy, very welcoming environment. It is a perfect stop along State Street for book lovers who enjoy browsing through shelves of classics, bestsellers, and unique finds.

Tondi Gelato is a family-run gelato shop that specializes in authentic Italian gelato made fresh daily. The rotating menu features a wide variety of flavors, from traditional options like pistachio and stracciatella to creative seasonal specials.

PRO TIP: If you would rather not walk then consider hopping on the Santa Barbara Trolley Tour for a relaxing and informative way to see the city’s top attractions. This open-air trolley offers a guided tour, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the sights without the need to navigate on foot.

As you continue down State Street, at the very end you will find the famous Stearns Wharf.

GOOD TO KNOW: Before the 1870s, Santa Barbara was largely isolated due to its natural barriers of ocean and mountains. Everything changed in 1867 when John Peck Stearns moved to town and set up a lumber yard at the end of State Street. By 1872, he completed Stearns Wharf, which allowed ships to dock even at low tide, transforming the city’s access to the outside world.

Today, Stearns Wharf stands as California’s oldest operating wooden wharf, having weathered both natural and man-made challenges over the years.

We recommend checking out the Deep Sea Tasting Room on the second floor of Stearns Wharf.

This spot offers stunning ocean and coastline views and is run by Conway Family Wines. It’s the perfect place to sample local wines in a laid-back, seaside setting. Whether you prefer crisp whites or bold reds, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Now, it is time to head out to dinner, and you can’t miss the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, a great spot at the end of Stearns Wharf, known for its fresh seafood.

Here, you will be able to enjoy tasty dishes like shrimp, clams, and fish tacos, all made with local ingredients.

The casual vibe and beautiful ocean views make it a perfect place to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal after a day of exploring!

If you still have some energy left, then head to the Funk Zone located no more then half a mile from Stearns Wharf.

The Funk Zone is known as the “hipster” neighborhood of Santa Barbara. It has been recently renovated part of town and has brought new businesses to Santa Barbara. It is widely known for its wine-tasting rooms but also has lots of fun bars, restaurants, and boutiques to shop at.

Start your morning with breakfast at Helena Avenue Bakery in the Funk Zone. Make sure to try the blueberry scones and the banana bread Elvis style with peanut butter, bacon and honey.

Then, head to the historic Old Mission Santa Barbara and the stunning Santa Barbara County Courthouse.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to go kayaking in the harbor or bike along the Cabrillo Bike Path. The day will wrap up with a delicious dinner at Brophy Bros.

Founded in 1786 by Spanish Franciscans, it’s the tenth of California’s 21 missions and is often called the “Queen of the Missions” because of its stunning architecture and beautiful setting.

The mission features a twin bell tower façade, lush gardens, and a historic cemetery where many early settlers are buried.

Inside, you’ll find a museum showcasing artifacts from the mission’s early days, along with a church that’s still active today. It’s a great spot to soak in some history and admire the blend of Spanish, Mexican, and Native American influences that shaped Santa Barbara.

PRO TIP: If you want a deeper dive into the history, consider joining a guided tour. The docents are knowledgeable and can share fascinating stories that you won’t find in the exhibits.

The Old Mission Santa Barbara 

GOOD TO KNOW: Right across from the mission is the Mission Rose Garden, a beautiful spot with over 1,500 rose bushes. It’s a perfect place to relax and take in the views of the mission’s stunning architecture.

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is not just a place for legal proceedings—it’s an architectural masterpiece and a significant piece of the city’s history.

Completed in 1929, this Spanish-Moorish-style building is renowned for its stunning details, including colorful tile work, wrought iron fixtures, and hand-painted ceilings.

The highlight of the courthouse is the Mural Room, which features large, vibrant murals depicting Santa Barbara’s history, from the Chumash Indians to the Spanish colonization.

Another must-see is the Clock Tower, where you can climb up (or take the elevator) to enjoy 360-degree views of the city, the mountains, and the ocean.

• Kayaking in the Harbor

For a fun and active afternoon, consider kayaking in Santa Barbara Harbor!

The Cabrillo Bike Path is a fantastic way to experience Santa Barbara’s beautiful coastline!

It stretches 4.2 miles one way from Stearns Wharf to Butterfly Beach and it will take you along the waterfront, passing through picturesque parks and seaside neighborhoods.

The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it accessible for cyclists of all skill levels.

Bike rentals are easy to find near Stearns Wharf. Several shops offer a range of bikes, including cruisers, hybrids, and even electric bikes, with all the necessary gear like helmets and locks. They usually provide maps and tips for the route, ensuring you have everything you need for a great ride.

If you can bike all the way to Butterfly Beach, then you are in for a treat!

Butterfly Beach is a serene and picturesque spot located in the upscale Montecito area. This small, sandy beach is known for its beautiful, rolling waves and stunning sunsets.

PRO TIP: If you are not into kayaking or biking, then my recommendation is to take a drive to Butterfly Beach. While you are there, make sure to take a drive down Coast Village Road for the high-end shops, dining, and people-watching.

After an afternoon of kayaking or biking, it is time for dinner!

Head to Brophy Bros., located right on Santa Barbara Harbor. This spot is perfect for enjoying amazing ocean views while indulging in some fantastic seafood.

Their fish and chips are a must-try—tender and fresh, they’re a standout dish that you won’t want to miss.

The relaxed atmosphere and stunning views make it a great choice to wrap up your day in Santa Barbara.

Next, explore the stunning Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens and take in the lush landscapes.

We will start your Sunday itinerary with a visit to the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens located just a 20-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara,

Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens cover an area of 78 acres and feature California native plants.

The garden boasts over 5 miles of trails. One of the highlights is the Inspiration Point Trail, a 3-mile hike that provides breathtaking views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. This trail is moderately challenging but well worth the effort for the stunning vistas you’ll encounter.

Other notable spots within the gardens include the California Native Garden, which showcases a range of regional plants, and the Mission Garden, highlighting the historical connection between the mission era and local flora.

The Japanese Garden offers a peaceful retreat with its beautifully landscaped paths and tranquil pond.

PRO TIP: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle.

The Douglas Family Preserve is a great spot for a relaxing hike and some beautiful views.

GOOD TO KNOW: This 70-acre park was once a well-known nursery, but after it closed in 1972, there were several plans to develop the land. None of those plans went through, and in 1987, the community rallied together to raise over $2 million to buy the land. It was named in honor of actor Michael Douglas, who contributed to the purchase.

One of the park’s highlights is the one-mile flat loop trail. This easy hike gives you great views of the coastline on one side and overlooks a park where you can see paragliders launching from the nearby mountains.
