Monterey Bay is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, thanks to its deep underwater canyon that creates a rich marine environment. This natural phenomenon attracts a diverse range of marine life, making every tour a unique adventure.

Monterey Bay is home to a variety of whale species throughout the year. From April to mid-December, you can spot humpback whales and blue whales, the largest animals on the planet.

Awe-inspiring moments with Humpback Whales in Monterey Bay – a breathtaking encounter with the giants of the sea.

During the winter months, from December to April, gray whales migrate through the area on their journey between Alaska and Mexico. In addition to these giants, orcas (killer whales) are also seen occasionally, particularly during the spring and summer when they hunt migrating gray whales.

PRO TIP: Be sure to bring a camera, binoculars, and warm clothing, as it can get chilly on the water.

Drive to Point Lobos Natural Reserve

After your thrilling Whale Watching Tour, drive to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.

Often referred to as “the crown jewel of the State Park System” due to its breathtaking beauty, Point Lobos offers an array of stunning trails that showcase California’s coastline.

There are several hiking trails. My recommendation is to check out either Cypress Grove Tail or Bird Island Trail. Here are some details:

Cypress Grove Trail:

  • Length: Approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers) round trip
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Details: This loop trail takes you through one of the only two naturally growing stands of Monterey cypress trees remaining on Earth. The trail offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline, tide pools, and the Pacific Ocean. The path is well-marked and mostly flat, making it accessible for hikers of all ages and skill levels. Interpretive signs along the way provide information about the unique flora and fauna of the area.

The trail continues to China Cove, known for its turquoise waters and sea otters, and then to Gibson Beach, a secluded sandy beach. The trail includes some stairs and uneven terrain, making it slightly more challenging than the Cypress Grove Trail, but still manageable for most hikers.
